The Switchboard
Naked LunchThe Switchboard is a device devised by Dr. Benway for interrogation under Annexia’s police system. Its arbitrary connections, timed signals, and escalating penalties turn a simple switching task into a method of discipline intended to produce helplessness and breakdown.
Design and Procedure
Dr. Benway describes the Switchboard as one of several disciplinary procedures. Electric drills are clamped against the subject’s teeth and can be activated at any time. The subject must operate an arbitrary switchboard, connecting designated sockets in response to bells and lights. Each mistake brings a penalty, while the signals gradually accelerate beyond the subject’s reaction time.
The procedure’s force lies not only in the apparatus but in its rules: the subject must continue trying to follow instructions that become impossible to meet. After half an hour, Benway says, the subject breaks down like an overloaded thinking machine.
Benway’s Interrogation Doctrine
Benway places the device within a broader account of coercive interrogation. He says that he generally avoids torture because it identifies an opponent and mobilizes resistance, but argues that the threat of torture can induce helplessness and gratitude toward an interrogator who withholds it. Punishment, in his account, can also be made to seem deserved once a subject has advanced far enough through treatment.
The Switchboard makes that doctrine procedural. Its arbitrary task and changing pace leave the subject struggling to satisfy a system whose demands are controlled by the interrogator. Benway presents the resulting breakdown as a technical outcome, framing coercion in the language of procedure and machine operation.
Significance
The device’s name suggests an ordinary system of connections, but its use converts connection into a test the subject cannot reliably pass. Bells and lights dictate the pace; the subject’s mistakes trigger punishment; and the apparatus makes the mismatch between human reaction and imposed demands the mechanism of control. The Switchboard thus embodies Benway’s effort to make interrogation appear systematic while using the procedure to produce helplessness.
